On the opening night of the Light to Night Festival Singapore on January 17, 2025, visitors gather at Travelling Through the Tropical Rainforest, an installation by Singaporean sculptor Han Sai Por at the Padang, with the projection Imprinted Memory by Singaporean artist Goh Beng Kwan illuminating the façade of the National Gallery in the background. Comprising six towering sculptural forms that evoke the grandeur of tropical palms, Travelling Through the Tropical Rainforest reflects on the intricate relationship between nature and urbanisation in Singapore’s ever-evolving cityscape. The oversized sculptures magnify the often-overlooked details of the natural world, urging audiences to reconsider their place within the urban environment and fostering a dialogue on coexistence.
Meanwhile, Goh’s Imprinted Memory chronicles his monumental journey as an artist, capturing his experiences of adapting to new surroundings, cultures, and challenges. Together, these installations invite viewers to engage with themes of transformation, resilience, and the blending of worlds.
Running from January 17 to February 6, 2025, the Light to Night Festival will feature over 70 artworks and programmes, transforming the Civic District into a dynamic space for artistic expression and reflection. Led by the National Gallery Singapore and in collaboration with the Asian Civilisations Museum, Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, Funan, The Arts House, Singapore Symphony Orchestra, and Victoria Theatre &amp; Victoria Concert Hall, this district-wide visual arts festival aims to inspire audiences to experience art in fresh and meaningful ways.
